Creator Marketing Playbooks

What do you need to agree before paying a creator per thousand views?

Before you accept a rate, agree on the number, the source, the reading date, and which distribution counts.

Name the source as well as the metric.

You sell freeze-dried dog treats. A creator has offered a flat fee for a video, or a smaller fee plus an amount for every thousand views.

Before comparing those offers, agree on what would determine the second bill: the exact metric, where both sides will read it, when they will read it, and which distribution belongs in it. State separately what the production fee covers.

Those questions do not establish that one compensation structure is best. They make the offer specific enough for you and the creator to assess.

Is CPM a reporting metric or a payment term?

CPM is a cost per thousand. In a report, it can describe what you spent per thousand impressions. In a payment offer, a per-thousand rate can determine what you owe. Views and impressions are different metrics, so the letters alone do not name the number in the agreement.

For the dog treats, ask whether “per thousand views” means the public count under the post or a figure in an analytics report. Write down the agreed metric before comparing the quoted rate with another offer.

Which number can both sides check?

Name the source as well as the metric.

A public post count and a figure in the creator's analytics are different inputs. Our guide to asking a creator for numbers only they can see distinguishes a post you can open from a screen you do not have access to. If the offer uses that second source, agree on what will be shared and what record each side will retain.

A screenshot can record a reading, but it does not give you access to the underlying account. Decide what you need to verify before agreeing to use that source.

When will you read it?

Give the reading a date.

The guide to choosing between reference videos asks readers to record when they read a count because it keeps moving. That matters differently when a count determines a payment: two readings taken on different days may produce different amounts.

For the dog treats, put the agreed reading date in the offer.

Which distribution counts?

Distinguish the creator's post from ads your brand runs, and record how the offer treats paid promotion.

Our guide to putting money behind a creator video separates unpaid distribution from delivery bought with an ad budget. The guide to reference video counts also says it could not confirm how a public post's count is put together. Do not infer a reliable paid-versus-unpaid breakdown from that number.

If you intend to promote the creator's post, decide how that affects the payment calculation before spending. If the agreement excludes some views but neither party can verify that exclusion, the calculation still has an unresolved input.

What does the production fee cover?

Specify the work separately from the number.

Our guide to what to settle before the shoot distinguishes a post on the creator's account from a file for the brand's ad account. It also addresses where the content can run, reuse, and changes. The guide to what to pay a creator connects the price to those agreed parts of the job.

Use those distinctions to describe what each part of this offer pays for. A fixed amount and a per-view amount do not, by themselves, prove that you are paying twice for the same thing.

For the dog treats, finish the offer with the deliverable, its conditions, the amount or rate, and the four agreed measurement inputs. Then assess that specific offer rather than a label such as “performance pay.”

Frequently asked questions

Do views from ads on our brand account count?

Only if that is part of the offer you agree on. The ads your brand runs and the creator's post are different objects. Name which results the payment calculation uses rather than assuming a rate on the post also includes your ads.

What if we are buying a file rather than a post?

There may be no public creator post to read. If a proposed payment depends on results from your ad account, name that source and how it will be shared. The absence of a creator post does not establish that every performance-linked arrangement is impossible.

Does this mean we should always use a fixed fee plus a bonus?

No. This article identifies the terms you need to assess an offer; it does not establish an optimal compensation structure. Any recommendation needs evidence about the work, the arrangement, and the outcome you are trying to buy.
